Door #2 · A real app
Claude Desktop
Same Claude — but as a proper app on your Mac or PC. Lives in your dock or taskbar. Better with files. The "power user" version of the website.
What it is
A free download from claude.ai/download. Installs like any other app. When you sign in, you use the same account as the website — your chats sync.
What it adds over the web
- Always one keystroke away. Pin it to your dock. No hunting for the right browser tab.
- Files feel native. Drag-and-drop documents straight in. Screenshots stick.
- MCP plugins. The big one. You can plug it into your Google Drive, your calendar, your Slack — and Claude can read or act there.
- Voice mode. Push-to-talk on Mac. Useful when you'd rather think out loud.
The MCP idea, in plain English
Think of MCP as "USB-C for AI." It's a standard that lets Claude reach into other tools — like your Drive, your inbox, or even your spreadsheet — instead of you copying things back and forth.
You add a "connector" once. Then in any chat, you can say "check my Drive for the spreadsheet from Tuesday" and Claude actually does.
Where it falls short
- Still a chat box. You're typing into a UI; you don't get to script things.
- Limited "doing." It can read connected tools but it's not building stuff on your computer.
- One chat at a time. Same ceiling as the website for parallel work.
How to install (2 minutes)
- Go to claude.ai/download.
- Pick Mac or Windows.
- Open the file, drag-to-Applications (Mac) or run the installer (Windows).
- Sign in with the same account you'd use on the website.
